Standout themes at IBC 2013 - nScreenMedia:
Amazon Web Services
Most surprising was the extent to which Amazon Web Services is becoming the default platform for video services online. Though AWS wasn’t emblazoned on every booth, vendor after vendor told me they were leveraging AWS for their cloud services. Mark Ramberg, Global Digital Media Business Strategy for Amazon Web Services, was on a panel of mine on Sunday. As I introduced him to the standing-room only crowd, I ask the audience how many of them had heard of AWS before they walked in the room: virtually every hand went up. When I asked how many knew Microsoft’s cloud service barely a third raised their hands.
High Efficiency Video Codec
Any booth with a set-top, encoder or streaming business to sell had a demonstration of HEVC. For example, Elemental was showing a live encoding of 1080p video at 30 frames a second that look great at just 2.5mbps. Though the technology is often mentioned in the same breath as 4K video, it’s clear the codec is going to have a huge impact on the delivery of HD video online. More on the subject later this week.
Multi-Screen Video
Every vendor worth its salt had a large sign proclaiming they could deliver to multi-screens. Small vendors took aim at one aspect of the problem. For example, Norigin has a cross-platform app environment making it possible to write an app once and run on many devices. Large vendors covered all the bases, with companies like Ericsson and Cisco showing complete multi-screen distribution platforms. Even the problem of app reliability in a multi-screen environment was on the agenda. S3 showed how the company can test multi-screen features like pause on one screen, resume on another.
4K
From video production to displays, 4K video loomed large. There were several conference sessions on the subject (I even moderated one.) Every booth touting 4k had a big beautiful display showing slow pan video, mostly of frogs and flowers (Hollywood content in the format seemed in distinct short supply). Though I continue to struggle to see a big difference between 4k and 1080p on anything less than a 55” display, I did find one aspect of the format that made a difference on smaller screens. I saw a demo on the Elemental booth of a sports video shot at 24 frames and 60 frames shown side by side on a small display. Blurring was considerably less at the higher frame rate.
RIP 3D
There was almost a complete absence of 3D: Just 3 short years ago the technology was pervasive. I don’t remember seeing a single booth demo or sign talking about the format. A testament to how far 3D has fallen occurred on my Rovi 4K panel on Sunday. Will Law of Akamai took some good natured ribbing as one of the other panelists had spotted a 3D display on the Akamai booth earlier that day. If there were any doubts in my mind about the death of the format, IBC 2013 has finally dispelled them.
